As of April 2001, a Animal Waste Ordinance with a permit system went into effect in Oconto County. This ordinance will effect anyone who is looking to install, move, reconstruct, extend, enlarge, convert or substantially alter including abandoning an animal waste storage facility. A permit will also be required for animal feedlots that exceed the state’s prohibitions or do not meet state standards or receive notice of discharges from the DNR. Feedlots of greater than 10,000 square feet and/or 10 animal units will also need to be permitted.
This ordinance is intended to protect the groundwater and surface water resources of Oconto County by regulating permitting of storage facilities, nutrient management practices, the four state prohibitions, permit new and expanding feedlots and require the removal of abandoned feed piles. Technical assistance is available at the Land Conservation Department to ensure your project will meet the code requirements. Remember to get your permit 60 DAYS before you begin.
Please contact the Land Conservation Division if you would like to view the Animal Waste Ordinance.
